The 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea began on February 9th with its opening ceremony “Peace and Motion.” It featured dancing, singing and, of course, the parade of nations and the torch lighting. Then the events and fight for medals began. As of Feb. 23, USA has earned 22 total medals: 6 bronze, 8 silver and 8 gold. Norway has the most medals with 37 followed by Canada with 28, Germany with 26 and then the US. Some memorable moments from the games was 17-year-old Red Gerard’s win of the gold medal in the men’s slopestyle (snowboarding) as well as a phenomenal gold medal win in the women’s halfpipe by 17-year-old phenom Chloe Kim. Shaun White won gold in a snowboarding event, and Mikaela Shiffrin won gold in the giant slalom.

Team USA’s women's hockey team won gold against Canada in a nail-biting shootout in overtime. This was their first gold win since the 1998 Olympics. In skating, sibling duo Alex and Maia Shibutani won bronze in ice dancing mixed, Yuzuru Hanyu from Japan won the men’s individuals, and 15-year-old Alina Zagitova from Russia won the women's individuals. Canada placed first in the team mixed skate followed by Russia and USA. Elana Taylor and Lauren Gibbs won silver in women's bobsled. There were so many events to cover at the games to watch and appreciate for this year’s Olympic games. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we did!
