DINOSAUR PLACE

The idea for this comic came rather suddenly to me; I do not get ideas to make fun of Jurassic Park during French class on a daily basis. I have been a fan of dinosaurs since I was little, and so when I finally watched the Jurassic Park movies, I was a little let down by all of the inaccuracies about the dinosaurs. Of course, this is not entirely their fault, as the evidence for quill knobs, and thus feathers, on raptors was not completely explored. Their ideas of what dinosaurs looked like continue into their more recent movies, however, so I figured, why not draw a comic that features an accurate Velociraptor, which is about two feet tall or so.

"IT" COMES TO HIGH SCHOOL

With October being spooky month, I knew making a Halloween comic would be a given thing. Plus, a recent remake of a horror movie gave me the perfect subject matter for a parody. I thought that one of the most iconic scenes from the original film would work well: a clown luring someone into the sewer. What if the clown was luring a typical high school student? I tried to think of both what a student might WANT and what they might HATE or FEAR. Both categories were narrowed down to similar topics. We don't like the work we do while studying or doing homework and, therefore, want a way out of it. That's why I had the clown say he knew how to "survive" high school, only to trick the student with piles of work.

I’m sure it’s no surprise that I like band, seeing as this is my second band related comic. Well, on the day of the marching band’s final competition, we passed one of those walk-through metal detectors while walking to the band truck. My friend who plays the sousaphone took one look at it and said, “I wonder what would happen if I went through there.” We went on about that for a while because we thought it was funny. Sousaphones are brass instruments, so they would obviously make an activated metal detector go off. I suggested that I turn the idea into a comic, so here we are. Even with the slight changes I made, I can’t say that I can take all the credit for this one...

BAND IN THE WINTER

Well, this month’s comic may take a little bit of explaining. Marching band rehearsals tend to get cold when autumn approaches, especially the ones before our final competition. When it gets cold enough, some people might decide to get into huddles, similar to penguins. It might sound a little silly, but at least it keeps us from becoming too cold. It probably looks a lot weirder to people who are not band kids, which is why this seemed like a decent idea for this month’s comic. Like the last edition, this was technically not my idea, so don’t give me all the credit!

BAND MAGIC

Anyone who has done marching band knows that the band CAN AND WILL perform in pretty much any kind of weather. It’s not necessarily the most convenient thing when it’s pouring rain outside, but as the saying goes, the show must go on. With this in mind, another band member jokingly suggested that even if the football field flooded, we would STILL have to find a way around it. That obviously wouldn’t be the case, but considering how hard the band works for a seven minute performance, there isn’t much that stands in our way when it comes to weather. Again, don’t give me all the credit for this month’s idea...

OHIO WEATHER

I thought this time around I would make a comic with a theme that can be understood by everyone at the school. Obviously, not everyone can relate to the band comics. I mean, do I really need to explain this one? I’m pretty sure that if you are reading this, then you are well aware of the unpredictable and annoying weather here. We could experience every single season in a day if we are “lucky” enough. With the frequent changes in weather patterns going on recently, I decided that exaggerating the concept would make for a good comic. Hopefully, I can try to make more comics in the future that are also relatable to a wider range of people.

EXAM WEEK

Earlier this month when I needed inspiration for my next comic, someone suggested that I make a comic about state testing. I asked what part of state testing, and he said the fact that sometimes you may get anxious about it for nothing. This actually made me think about some of my experiences with exams. Similar to how he described state testing, I have had times when I’ll study really hard for an exam that I’m particularly worried about, only for the actual exam to be not very difficult at all. All that worrying for no reason in the end. Is that just the result of trying to be a decent student? Maybe. Hopefully other people can relate to that.

SOUSAPHONE PERKS

I decided to end this school year with another band related comic since my previous two comics were taken in different directions. The idea came from hearing a funny story from a Winds competition. Apparently while the band was on its way to the Nutter Center, the bus passed a lake. A sousaphone player turned to one of the adults and asked, “are tubas buoyant?” He was implying that he wanted to use his instrument as a boat, which would actually be a pretty interesting sight to see. I was originally going to make the comic about “things that are buoyant” with a sousa being the joke one, but then decided that I would turn it into a “funny life hack” for when you find normal boats to be too boring. I mean, just imagine someone actually being able to use a tuba as a raft! I also decided that I would try a slightly different art style for this month's comic, one with little to no lineart and simpler looking character designs. I probably won't end up using the character style too often in future comics, but I actually kinda like the look of no lineart. Maybe I'll start use that coloring style in the more often...
