Sexual Assault Allegations in the U.S. Government

Donald Trump gained international attention when the news was dominated by accusations against him for sexually assaulting various women. Now, serving as president, he is among many others whose alleged acts of sexual misconduct have come to light.

Prior to the presidential election, over a dozen women publicly came out and said that Mr. Trump had committed some sort of unwanted sexual act against them. He dismissed their claims and called them liars, saying that “nobody has more respect for women” than he. Several women accused him of touching them inappropriately or kissing them without their permission. One woman, Jessica Drake, even said that she was offered $10,000 in exchange for having sex with Mr. Trump.

In addition to this, in a 2005 recording that was released shortly before the 2016 election, Trump was heard making extremely inappropriate comments about women and even admitted to making unwanted advances on them.

Evidently, none of this cost President Trump the election.

But he’s not the only one being accused of sexual misconduct. He is joined by former president Bill Clinton, Senator Al Franken (D-Minn.), Representative John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) and senatorial candidate Roy Moore (R-Ala.). And it seems as if the list is constantly growing.

President Trump had plenty to say about these allegations- but only the ones made against democrats. He took to Twitter, saying “The Al Frankenstein [sic] picture is really bad” and that it “speaks a thousand words.” However, when it comes to the allegations against Roy Moore, who is accused of molesting and acting inappropriately with eight underage girls when he was in his 30s, the president has remained mostly silent. He even implied support for Moore, saying, “we don’t need a liberal person in there” in reference to his opponent for the senate race. The Moore campaign thanked the president for voicing his support.

Many others have also ignored the allegations against Moore, saying that they are cause for suspicion due to the fact that they are only coming to light prior to the election.

So, how should these allegations be handled? It’s a tough question to answer, given that many assaults take place in a private setting, making them a matter of he-said-she-said. Several victims have produced witnesses to the assault or friends who have known about it since it initially took place, but this has not been enough for a conviction. Men who have committed disgusting acts of sexual misconduct are still able to be elected.

The American government should be trying to solve the issue of sexual assault, but it seems instead that they are only adding fuel to the fire.
