The Future is Now

The planet Earth is home to millions of animal species, each with unique features and habitats in which they live. From an early age we are taught about these fascinating creatures, from the usual dogs and cats to lions and tigers. Rarely do we think about a world without such diversity, but this soon may become a reality. Scientists are predicting that in the next century a third of the earth’s species may die off, creating the planet’s sixth mass extinction in the history of its existence. Species are dying at an alarming rate, which has already led to some food production issues. A mass extinction could lead to all sorts of catastrophes, including imbalance in the food chain and a drastic change to the way humans function. Basically, this is bad news. But what can we do to prevent it from happening at all?

Researchers predict that we have about fifteen years to change our ways and create a healthier planet. Our actions today directly affect the world of tomorrow. If we want to save the world, we have to act now. We have to start investing in clean energy, as the burning of fossil fuels is heating up the atmosphere at a rate we cannot control. Many countries have already taken steps toward cleaner energy with policies such as the Paris Agreement. Although, not all countries are a part of this agreement that need to be. The United States, which is the second largest producer of pollution in the world, is not a part of the Paris Agreement. If we want to make strides toward cleaner energy, we really need all hands on deck.

To prevent this mass extinction, we also need to stop the illegal trafficking of wildlife. When animals and plants are removed from one environment and placed into another, it can cause issues. Invasive species can destroy wildlife that is already living in the area they invade. This can cause a slew of environmental issues and lead to the extinction of plant and animal species all over the world.

If we want to save the planet, we have to act fast.

Preventing climate change is just about the only way we can save the species of this world. We are in control of our own future, of our children’s future.

Humans alone have the ability to fix the problem that we caused.

So, let’s get out there and save the world.
