National Mole Day is celebrated each year on October 23 at 6:02 am to 6:02 pm by chemists, chemistry students and teachers as well as schools all across the country. It commemorates Avogadro's number, or the number of particles found in one mole (a unit of measurement in chemistry). There are 6.02 × 1023 atoms per mole, which is the number celebrated in this unofficial holiday.
The idea for the tradition started in the early 1980s when a high school chemistry teacher suggested the idea to a journal for science teachers. Eleven years later in 1991, the National Mole Day Foundation was created. This organization decides each year's Mole Day theme. This year's is The Molevengers, based on the Marvel’s Avengers series of superhero movies and comics. Schools across the country celebrate with activities involving chemistry, moles (the mascot of Mole Day), 6.02× 1023, and the year’s Mole Day theme. Students at MHS have made t-shirts, stuffed moles, mole-related foods (like guacaMOLE), and even writing their own Mole Day songs. Whatever you decide to do on October 23, the Valhalla Voice hopes you had a Happy Mole Day!
