MHS Students Combating Drug And Alcohol Abuse

There are many clubs at MHS. But one of them exists to help with keeping our community safe and to make sure people are responsible with the actions they take. So, I talked to a student in BOLD club because I wanted to open up people’s minds about things that can be done to help our community and the people in it.

While I was talking to a student, Natalie Fedor, I asked what BOLD means. I knew it had to do with the use of drugs, but what I didn’t know was that they help people. BOLD stands for Building Our Lives Drug-Free. They were formally known as SADD. BOLD is about making good choices in high school and in life. They also help build relationships with people that have the same opinions as you may have about the abuse and use of drugs and alcohol.

On the Miamisburg High School’s website it says, “BOLD is committed to principles, which support safety and concern while having the responsibility of operating a vehicle.” So, I asked Natalie to clarify what that really meant. She said, “It stands for making the right choices and being committed to not drinking and driving.”

To heighten the awareness of drug and alcohol use, the group schedules events for the community and school. For example, they plan Red Ribbon week and the Mock Crash. They also have outings where they volunteer at different places.

How do you know that someone is intoxicated, whether it be from drugs or alcohol? Well, look at their eyes. If they look glassy, red-rimmed, or have dilated pupils, you can determine that they are intoxicated. Some people also don’t act the same when they are using drugs and/or alcohol.

I asked her what would Natalie do in a situation when encountering someone who is intoxicated. Her answer warmed my heart. “We talk about how we can offer to take them home or call someone for them. You just can’t leave someone in that state alone with their judgement clouded,” she said.

One of the most important things that she has learned from being in this group is that if you have the right group of friends with the same beliefs as you have, then it is easier to just “say no” to drinking and/or using drugs. We need more people like this in our school and community, especially with the way that people are using drugs nowadays.

But sometimes, BOLD club members and other drug-abstinence advocates feel they are alone because not everyone has the same opinion that the use of drugs is dangerous. But if you find the right people, you can change the world. BOLD can also bring you closer to people that may have gone through a rough time and used drugs or alcohol and that want to help others so they don’t make the same mistakes as they did.

Maybe if we all join together we can help improve our schools and communities.
