GOP Dumbfounded

In early September, President Trump, along with Democratic Leadership, passed a deal regarding raising the debt ceiling tied to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund.

GOP leaders were stunned.

Top republicans, Paul Ryan R-WI, and Mitch McConnell R-KY splaying his famous unpredictability, sided with the short-term option proposed by Chuck Schumer D-NY and Nancy Pelosi D-CA. The deal stalled the impending government shutdown, which allows for some breathing room, but once the deal ends in three months, Congress will be thrown into a political showdown.

This deal is important, and might I add, odd, because of one thing: Bipartisanship.

Due to the vitriol of today's atmosphere, this deal came out of nowhere, contesting the very fabric of political reality. Across the Washington D.C. spectrum, I presume once the news hit of the agreement, an audible gasp swept across the city.

According to sources close to the administration, President Trump “grew weary of the back and forth” between parties.

“We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer,” said The President as the meeting ended.

Some Republicans did not agree. Mark Meadows R-NC was quoted as saying, “Everybody’s surprised.” Later, he criticized Republicans for not adding an effective “conservative solution” to the table. Ben Sasse R-NE also gave his two cents by adding, “This is an embarrassing moment for a Republican-controlled congress and a Republican Administration.”

Just recently, on September 13, President Trump met again with Democratic leadership to discuss the Deferred Action for Childhood (DACA) program, along with other topics. According to a Schumer spokesman, a deal had already been reached (it had not): a deal that would put a DACA legislative fix in the works, and would include an immigration package that excluded a border wall.

Across twitter, conservatives were outraged, fearing that the man they had elected has flip-flopped on his biggest campaign promises. Sean Hannity of Fox News tweeted, “@POTUS needs to stay on course and keep his promises or it’s over! Pelosi and Schumer can never be trusted.”

Breitbart news’ headline for the next day was “Amnesty Don.”

President Trump later pushed back. “No deal was made last night on DACA. Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote,” he tweeted at 6:11 in the morning.

Is this a turning point within the polarized administration?

Has President Trump finally became what he dreaded most: a politician?

One thing is important to note: President Trump likes to win. Throughout his campaign, he promised his base that America would “win again.” He has a proven history of working with his opposition to achieve what is needed, so expect more of the same. Progress has no political affiliation.
